WAGNER, S.D. (AP) – A grocer whose family has been in business 108 years is adding to his operation, almost by accident.
When R.F. Buche bought the Tripp store this year, he made a courtesy call to Greg Gemar, who owns stores in neighboring Scotland and Tyndall.
The Press & Dakotan reports Gemar had been contemplating retiring, so the call led to Buche’s purchase of both stores. He took possession of Tyndall Sept. 7 and will take over in Scotland Jan. 18.
Buche’s purchases of the Tripp, Scotland and Tyndall stores mark an eastward move for Buche, who is headquartered at his Wagner store. His other locations are in Mission, White River, Gregory and Lake Andes.
He says a town has problems if it doesn’t have a bank, school and grocery store.
