PIERRE, S.D. – The Pierre Governors scored the first two times they touched the ball as they cruised to a 48-7 over Mitchell in the matchup of the top rated teams in the state in Class 11AA Friday night in Pierre. Austin Christopherson became the first Governor football player in history to return a kickoff and a punt back for a touchdown in the same game as he returned the opening kickoff 96 yards for a touchdown and 2 minutes later returned a 41 yard punt for a touchdown giving the Governors a 14-0 lead. Pierre led 21-0 at the quarter break and 34-0 at half. Alex Gray ran for two touchdowns and threw for a third and Jace Jerome and Brevan Kaiser scored on runs as the Govs improve to 3-0 on the season and hand the Kernals their first loss of the season. Pierre had 417 total yards led by Jerome who rushed for a season high 148 yards on 18 carries. The Governors threw for 161 yards with Gray hitting Shay Reinke on a 50 yard touchdown pass in the 3rd quarter. Gray scored on runs of 11 and 17 yards. Jerome’s touchdown run was 11 yards and Kaiser scored on an 11 yard run. Pierre takes their 3-0 record on the road next Friday when they travel to Sioux Falls to face Sioux Falls O’Gorman in the Knights homecoming contest.
