Eagle Butte Man Charged in Federal Court with Second Degree Murder

PIERRE, S.D. – (DRG News) An Eagle Butte man has been indicted by a federal grand jury for Second Degree Murder.  30-year-old Jared Slader was indicted Tuesday and appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark Moreno on Wednesday.  He has pleaded not guilty to the indictment.  The allegations are the result of an incident on August 31 in which authorities say Slader killed Lester Peneaux by stabbing him with a knife.  He is being held in the custody of the U.S. Marshal’s Service and a trial date in his case has yet to be set.  The maximum penalty upon conviction for Second Degree Murder is any term of years up to life in prison, a $250,000 fine or both.
