PIERRE, S.D. (AP) – About 15 state lawmakers are expected to try their hand at showing beef cattle at the South Dakota State Fair.

The event on Aug. 31 in Huron is the fifth annual Legislative Beef Show.

It is a friendly competition that pairs lawmakers with youth livestock exhibitors from their legislative districts. The youth partners prepare the animals for competition and offer legislators a crash course in livestock showmanship.

The lawmakers then compete in showing the animals in the show ring. Sen. Shantel Krebs of Renner won the event last year.

State Agriculture Secretary Lucas Lentsch says the friendly competition helps lawmakers understand the hard work that young people put into showing livestock at the State Fair. He says it also gives young people a chance to meet members of the Legislature.
