PIERRE, S.D. – (DRG News) The Pierre Volunteer Fire Department responded to two calls early this morning.  A fire alarm was reported at Faith Lutheran Church this morning about 2:15 a.m.  Pierre FD Second Assistant Chief Leon Ellis says it was determined that it was a false alarm.

About 3:00 a.m. this morning, a tree was reported on fire on West Elizabeth Street.   Ellis says the tree was located in the yard of a residence and was close to a home.  The fire was apparently started by a lightning strike.  When he arrived at the scene, Ellis says he found branches burning on the ground and a sizeable branch in the tree, about 20-25 feet up in the air was also on fire.   Ellis says firefighters doused the branches burning on the ground and hit the upper part of the tree with water.  They fought the fire in the tree for a time and finally decided to cut the large burning branch down with a chainsaw to make sure the fire was completely extinguished.  Most of the embers from the tree were falling away from the nearby home and Ellis says the structure was not threatened.  Firefighters were at the scene of the tree fire for about an hour and a half.
