RAPID CITY, S.D. – The South Dakota State American Legion Championship Baseball Tournament begins today in Rapid City at Fitzgerald Stadium, home for the host team, Rapid City Post 22. Pierre Post 8 is in the tournament field. The runners up of Region 3A will face the champions of Region 1A, Aberdeen Smittys in the day’s second game at about 2 pm central time this afternoon. Spearfish, the Region 3A champion opens tournament play at 11 am central time against Region 1A runner up Watertown. The night bracket has the Wild Card entrant, Sioux Falls West taking on Region 2A champion Mitchell at 6 pm central time and the host team Rapid City Post 22 facing Region 2A runner up Brandon Valley in the days final game at 9 pm central time. The double elimination tournament will continue and decide it’s champion on Sunday. The State Champion will advance to the Central Plains Region tournament as the South Dakota representative.
The Pierre Post 8 American Legion baseball team enters the State American Legion Championship tournament with a record that is 5 games under the .500 mark at 19 and 24. But Post 8 owns two victories over it’s first round opponenet, Aberdeen Smittys, during the course of the regular season. The two teams split a doubleheader in Pierre on June 2nd when Pierre lost the second game of the doubleheader 9-7 after winning the first game 8-3. Then in Aberdeen, on July 2nd, Pierre defeated Smittys 4-2 in a 9 inning game. Aberdeen brings a 22 and 26 record into the game.
This years South Dakota State American Legion championship tournament has no clear cut favorite this year. Mitchell and Brandon Valley both have winning records while Sioux Falls West and Watertown hovered around the .500 mark on the season. Spearfish has alot of offensive firepower as Pierre found out in the Region tournament allowing 39 runs in two meetings and Rapid City Post 22 has a winning record, the home field advantage and tradition.
