CHAMBERLAIN, S.D. – (DRG News) The third weekend in August will bring what organizers hope will become an annual event for the Chamberlain/Oacoma area-“American Island Days”. During a three day period, organizers have planned several activities, ranging from a car show to pontoon races, raft races, a triathalon and more. Donna Buche, who is helping put together next month’s celebration says it was decided to call the weekend of fun “American Island Days” to remember one of the area’s former well known features…American Island Park. Buche says American Island used to be located near the old bridge that connects Chamberlain and Oacoma-before the construction of the Missouri River Dams.
Buche says the only evidence of the existence of the old American Island Park that remains are piers that held a bridge leading to the island.
Buche says with several events planned August 16-18, volunteers are still needed; as are food and craft vendors.
Some other activities during next month’s American Island Days include SD Army National Guard raft rides, and inflatables for all ages. Those that have questions about the three day event can contact the Chamberlain/Oacoma Chamber of Commerce.
