PIERRE, S.D. – (DRG News) One of the donors for a statue that was put up Friday as part of the Trail of Governors project says she is pleased with how the artwork looks now that it’s displayed in Pierre. April and Matthew Smart donated $34,000 for Governor Arthur Mellette’s statue. It was erected in an alcove in front of the Hughes County Courthouse Friday morning. April Smart, whose father Leroy Foster serves on the Board of the Trail of Governor’s Foundation, says she and her husband picked Mellette to donate to because of Mellette’s personal effort to help the state during a time when its treasury was looted by a former office holder.
Smart says she believes the Trail of Governor’s project to be a valuable one to donate to.
Smart also gave funds for the Mellette statue in honor of her grandparents. She watched as the statue was placed across the street from her offices Friday and believes the final product is beautiful. She also says the alcove and the way the statue is placed-looking down Pierre Street-turned out better than expected.
