South Dakotans Have Mixed Success at NHSFR

ROCK RAPIDS, Wyo. – The weeklong 2013 National High School Finals Rodeo in Rock Springs, Wyo., wrapped up its first round on Wednesday, and Team South Dakota turned in a number of standout performances.  Rapid City’s Shane O’Connell led the South Dakota charge on Wednesday, turning in the top bareback score of the rodeo with a 79-point ride in the morning performance and coupled with a 62-point trip in the evening to claim a spot atop the bareback average standings.  Spearfish’s Rickie Engesser nabbed and trussed her goat in 8.78-seconds to take the top spot in the Wednesday evening performance.  Sierra Christiansen of Kennebec also benefited from a big Wednesday turning in two solid breakaway roping runs including a fourth place 2.53-second run in the evening to move into ninth in the average.  In Thursday’s morning performance a couple of other South Dakotans summoned up solid performances as Shelby Strand of Harrisburg placed second in girls’ cutting with 145 points and vaulted to sixth in the average, while Madison Rau of Mobridge finished seventh in barrels and stands 10th in the average.  Dupree’s Jana Hunt kept up the beat in the evening performance, weaving her mount through the barrels in 20.122 seconds.  Meadow’s Tayte Clark’s 58-point bareback ride was the second best of the evening.  And the team roping team of Treg Schaack of Edgemont and Sturgis’ Levi Lord as the duo which finished fourth in the first round turned in a no score on Thursday.
