PIERRE, S.D. – (DRG News) Today brings the Pierre/Fort Pierre Historical Commission’s annual Cedar Hill Cemetery Tour in Fort Pierre. The historic cemetery tour drew about 125 visitors during a similar event last year-according to Gordon Koch of the local historical organization. Koch says starting at 5:30 p.m., people can go to the Casey Tibbs South Dakota Rodeo Center and River Cities Public Transit will provide a bus ride to the cemetery every 15 minutes. He says the cemetery tours will be lead by long-time local resident Karl Fischer.
The cemetery is located southwest of Fort Pierre. It was established in the late 1800’s and has been neglected at times. Lately, though, Koch says the cemetery has received some TLC and that is helping to preserve the area’s rich history.
People planning to attend tonight should wear comfortable shoes. The last bus to take visitors back to the Casey Tibbs Center will depart the cemetery at 8:30 p.m. For more information about the Pierre/Fort Pierre Historical Commission, visit http://www.historicpierre.com/index.htm
