PIERRE, S.D. – (DRG News) Capital Area Counseling Service marks an anniversary this month, as the agency notes its 45th year of serving individuals and families struggling with addiction and mental health issues. A press release from CACS says that a group of thirty Pierre and Fort Pierre community members first met in March 1962 to organize a mental health association and chapter. Local staff members volunteered time, St. Mary’s Hospital donated space and mental health services started being offered in the area. Later, an advisory board was set up to look into developing a Pierre Mental Health Center and Capital Area Counseling Service, Inc. was created in 1968. Some of the agency’s current services include substance use outpatient intensive treatment and continued care, parenting skills, services for adults with severe mental illnesses, children’s services, Teen Court and most recently; CACS added the Boys and Girls Club of the Capital Area as one of its programs. The services have expanded over the past 45 years to serve nine counties in the Central South Dakota region.
