PIERRE, S.D. – (DRG News) The Pierre School District will hold its third and final public meeting soon to discuss an elementary school planning study. The meeting date was announced at last week’s Pierre School Board meeting. Meetings have already been held June 13 and July 9 and the final meeting in the series will be Thursday, August 1. Although meetings will be held once school board members decide how to proceed with future changes to the elementary buildings in the district, Superintendent Dr. Kelly Glodt says he believes the upcoming meeting will be the last that will take public input, questions and comment on proposals for the future of Pierre’s elementary structures.
Washington and McKinley Elementary Schools are the oldest elementary buildings in the district and will need some expensive and necessary upgrades in the near term. After studying Pierre’s elementary buildings, a Sioux Falls architectural firm suggested three options to the board. Those options include closing Washington and McKinley and either building a new elementary in northeast Pierre or expanding the newer elementary buildings-Jefferson and Buchanan. Also being considered is a plan to close McKinley and build a new two story structure on the grounds of the current Washington facility. Glodt announced that if the board decides next month which of those plans to follow, various committees will be formed like a “School Planning Committee” that will hash out various details of the approved plan.
Glodt also suggested that an Elementary School Boundary Work Group wide eventually be organized which would contain staff from each Pierre elementary, parents, and board members. He says the group would look at how to better equalize the district’s elementary population.
Washington, McKinley and the district’s Administration Building have been declared surplus property. Bids are due tomorrow and will be opened Wednesday afternoon. The board will consider the bids at a meeting that is scheduled for July 23 at 5:15 p.m.
The third public meeting on the elementary school project on August 1 will take place in the board room at the Administration Building and is scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m.
