Smith Wins State Men’s Match Play While Fitts Wins Womens SDGA Title




BROOKINGS, S.D. – Grant Smith, an incoming freshman at South Dakota State University, won the SDGA’S Men’s State Match Play Championship on Monday at Brookings Country Club, defeating Matt Johnson of Sioux Falls 2-and-1 in the 36-hole final round. Johnson led by three after the first 18 holes and four after the 22nd hole, but Smith’s steady play over the rest of the match carried him to victory. Smith birdied 12, the 30th hole of the match, after his approach shot struck the flagstick, and he never trailed again. He won the next hole for his first lead of the match, and then he won 16 to lead Johnson two up with two holes to play. The match finished on 17 when both players carded pars.

BROOKINGS, S.D. – Morgan Fitts of Brookings won the SDGA’s Women’s Match Play State Championship, defeating Parkston’s Sydney Bormann in Monday’s final round at the Brookings Country Club. Fitts led by one and two holes for much of the match, but Bormann won 13 and 15 to even up the match. Fitts birdied the 18th hole to win the match. Jordan Bormann, Sydney’s older sister and an incoming freshman at Augustana College, won the consolation bracket, defeating Augustana College senior Maggie Leland in a back-and-forth match decided on the fourth hole of a playoff.
