PIERRE, S.D. – (DRG News) A man who was bit by a dog in northwest Pierre Friday evening is hoping the owners of a black Labrador dog will come forth soon so he can avoid having to have rabies treatments. The man was reportedly bit by the black dog Friday evening as he walked his dog about 6:00 p.m. in the LaBarge Park area. The man says he had seen the young black Lab on previous walks. This time, he saw it playing fetch with its owner and the owner had taken it off its leash. The bite victim says he saw the dog running toward them as they were close to the intersection of Maple Avenue and Second Street and put his arm up to keep the Lab off his dog when the dog bit him. He says the owner came and got the Lab, but the bite victim didn’t think to ask identifying information as he was bleeding. He was able to get to his home about a block away and had to have six stitches for the wound. The man says he was told that rabies treatments must be given within ten days of a bite, and he’s into day three. He’s asking the owner of the Lab to come forth, simply to say whether the dog has had its rabies vaccination, so he doesn’t have to have unnecessary and painful treatments for the bite. Those that might have information that could help identify the dog should contact the Pierre Police Department at 773-7410.
