PIERRE, S.D. – (DRG News) Local emergency responders were called to the report of an accident between a Pierre bicyclist and a vehicle Sunday morning.  Deputy Jeff Hill of the Hughes County Sheriff’s Office says the accident was reported about 9:15 a.m. on Highway 1804-just south of the intersection with Grey Goose Road.  He says a group of bike riders were traveling north on the road when a northbound motorhome pulling a trailer approached the group.  Hill says the motorhome driver, who is from Pierre, moved over in an effort to give the bikers some leeway, but a gust of wind caught the vehicle, pushed it over to the right side of the road and one of the bike riders was struck in the head by the passenger side mirror on the rig.  Hill says the male bicyclist fell down and received non-life threatening injuries.  Hill did not have information on the bicyclist’s condition yesterday afternoon.  No other bike riders were hurt.   Hill says the accident is still under investigation.  Other agencies responding to the accident scene yesterday included American Medical Response ambulance, the South Dakota Highway Patrol, Pierre Police Department and Game, Fish and Parks Department.

  1. If the vehicle had moved the recommended 3 feet over then even a strong gust would not have caused impact with the cyclist.
