HOSMER, S.D. (AP) – Financial woes are forcing a Hosmer nursing home to shut its doors, closing down the largest employer in town.
The Hosmer Senior Citizens Home is closing July 15. For the past month, its residents have slowly been moving away, leaving for other facilities to call home.
Administrator Jennifer Bohn tells the Aberdeen American News that there have been “a lot of tears” over the past few weeks. Some of the residents have lived in the Main Street home for years.
Mayor Mike Swingler says the facility can’t financially make it, in part because of a dwindling population. He says its closure is like a death in the family because most city residents have worked at the home or have relatives or friends who work or live there.
