PIERRE, S.D. – (DRG News) The City of Pierre and Mayor Laurie Gill have been recognized by the National League of Cities for efforts to complete goals for “Let’s Move! Cities, Towns and Counties” (LMCTC). Two medals, a gold and silver, were given to Pierre for work done to improve access to healthy affordable food and increase opportunities for physical activity. Mayor Gill says in a press release, that being recognized by the National League of Cities is an honor. She says programs like Pierre’s summer rec program for youth and Pierre’s designation as a Playful City USA give the chance for youth to get outside, play and be healthy. Pierre has worked to map play spaces, developed an action plan and developed policies from that plan which have increased access to physical activity.
More than 320 cities, towns and counties are participating in LMCTC. Each month, the NLC recognizes local elected officials who achieve key benchmarks for the give LMCTC goals. The coalition is part of a national Let’s Move! Initiative which First Lady Michelle Obama says will help solve the childhood obesity epidemic within a generation.
