MILLER, S.D. – The Hand County Sheriff’s Office has released more details about the search for an elderly man who was found dead after being missing for about four days. LeRoy Nye was missing from his home in St. Lawrence since early Sunday morning. No one in the family knew Nye had left. At 7 a.m. Sunday, Nye’s family discovered he and a vehicle owned by the son was gone. After an area wide search Sunday thru Wednesday, Nye was found Wednesday evening at approximately 8 p.m. near a small pond just west of Cottonwood Lake in northwestern Jerauld County. He was found on private property nearly 900 feet off the right-of-way and out of sight to passing vehicles. The Civil Air Patrol was flying over Wednesday night when the crew spotted Nye’s car from the sky. The Civil Air Patrol circled the site until members of the South Hand County Fire Department arrived. Nye was found dead at the scene. Nye had farmed in the Pierre and Canning Area. The Reck Funeral Home of Miller is working with Isburg Funeral Chapel of Pierre for final funeral preparations.
