MILLER, S.D. – (DRG News) Hand County authorities continue to coordinate a search for an elderly Pierre man who disappeared from a St. Lawrence home over the weekend. Hand County Emergency Manager Nehemiah Volquardsen says Leroy Nye was last seen late Saturday night. Nye suffers from dementia and is very confused. It’s believed that he left a family member’s home in St. Lawrence early Sunday morning and hasn’t been seen since. He has not had his medication, food or water since Saturday and it’s believed he is not adequately dressed-wearing only a white t-shirt and underpants. He left St. Lawrence driving a 2001 dark green Chrysler Intrepid with South Dakota license plate 33M 202. Nye is in his 80’s and is described as having short grey hair and he wears glasses. Volquardsen says his office and the Hand County Sheriff’s Office have put the word out about Nye’s disappearance through a statewide “attempt to locate” and have contacted authorities from Aberdeen to Interstate 90-asking them to look for Nye. Yesterday, two planes canvassed most of Hand County looking for Nye. Volquardsen also says Hand County First Responders have searched every blacktop, gravel and passable road by ATV. Beadle County and Hughes County officials are also currently conducting searches for Nye Volquardsen asks area producers to check their farm and ranch properties for any signs of Nye or the missing car. Those that have any information that might help authorities find Nye can contact the Hand County Sheriff’s Office at 853-2408.
