PIERRE, S.D. – (DRG News) A pole-barn type building at Pierre Indian Learning Center was damaged in a fire yesterday. The Pierre Volunteer Fire Department was called to the report of a shed fire on the southeast corner of the campus about 4:15 p.m. Tuesday. Deputy Fire Chief Ian Paul says shortly after they arrived at the scene, firefighters began pulling off the siding of the 40 X 80 building to gain access to its interior. They were then able to knock down the flames quickly. The building contained an assortment of odds and ends and crews spent much of their time at the scene overhauling the fire and making sure there were no hot spots in the contents. One of the largest items in the building was a Hurricane deck boat. Paul says the building and the contents received extensive damage. No other buildings were threatened by the fire and the structure was not located close to any Pierre Indian Learning Center classes or dorms. Paul says the cause of the fire is undetermined, but it appears it started outside the building along some wooden telephone poles stored next to the structure and the flames moved inside through a gap at the bottom of one of the building’s walls. The two dozen firefighters that responded to the fire were at the scene for about two hours.
