YANKTON, S.D. – For the first time since 1995, there will be a new face leading the Mount Marty College men’s basketball program. Jim Thorson announced his retirement from the position Monday, according to a press release from Mount Marty College. He will assume “other duties in athletics,” the release said. A search for a new coach is already underway. Thorson spent 31 seasons as a college head coach, 18 with Mount Marty. In his third season in Yankton, Thorson guided the Lancer men to a 23-9 record and a berth in the NAIA National Tournament semifinals. His 2003-04 team went 21-11, marking the last winning season for the Lancers. They were 8-21 this past season. Thorson, who came into last season No. 10 on the NAIA Division II all-time coaches win list, previously served as athletic director and men’s basketball coach at Yankton College from 1979-84 and head men’s basketball coach at South Dakota State from 1985 to 1993.
