CORRRECTION: After this story was published, we were advised that the boat involved in this incident was stranded and was NOT stuck on a sandbar, as we were first told. The boat did not have power to return to shore-as the battery had died. The boaters contacted Pike Haven Resort, and a charged battery was brought to the stranded boat, which allowed the craft to return to shore on its own power. We apologize for the error.
PIERRE, S.D. – (DRG News) The Pierre Rescue Squad was summoned late Saturday to assist a stranded boater northwest of Pierre. Rescue Squad Captain Ron Bren says a boat was stuck on a sandbar west of Little Bend in the Cheyenne River area. The Game, Fish and Parks Department was called first and looked for the boat and the Pierre Fire Department Rescue Squad was called out about 11:00 p.m. to assist. Bren says rescue squad members were on their way out of town when they were told Pike Haven Resort staff had gone out and found the boat. He says no one was injured.
Bren says that boaters should keep in mind that conditions have changed in some areas of the river since 2011-especially in the Antelope Creek area. He says GPS units are outdated in some cases, so boaters should proceed with caution.
