WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – A former South Dakota basketball star and South Dakota State Miss Basketball will represent the United States in a tournament in China. Sam Ostarello, who starred at Stanley County, and collegiately at Purdue, will play for the NetScouts all-star team against teams from China, Australia and Brazil. Her team’s made up of several players from the Upper Midwest including Megan Voltz out of Denver who played AAU basketball with Ostarello. The players leave Monday for China – they’ll have one day of practice, then play around nine games. Ostarallo says she improved her strength, and rebounding, at Purdue as she leaves as the Boilermakers’ second-leading career rebounder. She was passed over in the recent WNBA draft – she hopes to create a free-agent opportunity by playing in Europe. Ostarello says the European, and WNBA, seasons don’t overlap, so it may be better she wasn’t drafted.
