RAPID CITY, S.D. – (DRG News) A Pierre man is the recipient of the South Dakota National Guard’s 2013 Lieutenant Colonel John J. Steele award. 2nd Lt. Richard Bauman was named the Guard’s Lieutenant of the Year. The award was established in 1968 and recognizes the most outstanding lieutenant in the South Dakota Army and Air National Guard. Bauman serves as a tactical intelligence officer for the 109th Regional Support Group in Rapid City and competed against lieutenants from each of the Guard’s major commands for the honor. As a tactical intelligence officer, Bauman provides intelligence reports and weather information for the 109th Group. He’s been with the unit for over a year. Bauman has more than 21 years of total service in the military. In 2003 and 2007, he deployed in support of Operations Enduring and Iraqi Freedom and also served in Bosnia in 1997 in Operation Join Endeavor. In addition to his Guard duties, Bauman also serves as a police officer for the Pierre Police Department.
