Highway Patrol Says Hand County Fatal Crash Reported Thursday South of Miller

PIERRE, S.D. – (DRG News) A two vehicle crash south of Miller Thursday resulted in the death of a Ree Heights man.  The South Dakota Highway Patrol says the accident occurred about 15 miles south of Miller on Highway 45 late yesterday afternoon-at 4:38 p.m.   Initial information indicates that 90-year-old Peter Werdel of Ree Heights was driving his car east on 215th Street and failed to stop at a stop sign.  His 2009 Buick Regal was struck by a southbound 2009 Ford F-150 pickup, driven by 45-year-old Timothy Hofer of Faulkton.  A passenger in the pickup, 43-year-old Sheri Hofer received minor injuries.  All three of those involved in the accident were wearing seatbelts.  Timothy Hofer and Peter Werdel were transported to the Hand County Memorial Hospital in Miller.  Werdel sustained fatal injuries.  The Highway Patrol, Hand County Sheriff’s Office and Hand County Fire and Rescue responded to the accident yesterday and the Highway Patrol continues to investigate.
