PIERRE, S.D. – (DRG News) The South Dakota Discovery Center and Aquarium is now known as the South Dakota Discovery Center. Center Director Kristie Maher says the three 150 gallon tanks that had been in place in the building since 1990 were removed a few days ago. Maher says the Game, Fish and Parks Department helped fund the installation of the Aquatic Resources exhibit 23 years ago and provided various fish species for the tanks. However, she says the mechanical parts were wearing out and a decision had to be made whether or not to repair the devices or to make changes. Maher says with the loss of the aquariums, the name of the organization has been legally changed-dropping the word “Aquarium” and the South Dakota Discovery Center and Aquarium signs will be replaced as funding is available. She says they are still trying to decide what to do with the former aquarium space and indicates that it may be used as a classroom or exhibit space. The Discovery Center board, staff and partners are discussing ideas for future use of that portion of the center.
