PIERRE, S.D. – (DRG News) Saturday brings the debut of a new exhibit at the South Dakota State Historical Society’s Museum in Pierre. The exhibit, called Furniture: The Fancy and the Functional will open Saturday in the museum’s Marvis T. and Florence Brown Hogen Gallery at the Cultural Heritage Center. Admission will be free all day and a public reception will be held from 1-4 p.m. The focus of the new exhibit is furniture found in the home throughout the years-from ornate to practical. Kate Vandal, Curator of Exhibits at the museum says work started to plan the new exhibit last year.
Vandal says the exhibit shows off several items from the museum’s permanent collection and some have never been displayed before. She says visitors will note that some of the pieces have interpretive signage with them that feature stories that go with the items and others offer details about their style.
The museum’s Curator of Interpretation, Ronette Rumpca, says interactive activities will also be part of the exhibit.
Museum staff will be on hand to speak with visitors and answer questions about the exhibit during Saturday’s reception.
