FORT PIERRE, S.D. – (DRG News) This weekend brings the start of the 2013 season for horse racing at the Stanley County Fairgrounds. There will be three weekends of racing in Fort Pierre once again this year-the last two weekends in April and the first weekend in May. Track manager Dennis Booth says the fairgrounds became the focus of activity earlier this month as horses, jockeys and trainers began to show up and fill the barns. He says horses from the upper Midwest to as far away as some southern states will be competing and everyone seems ready to go for another year. Booth says the races have been featured in Fort Pierre since 1947 and are a good draw for Fort Pierre and Pierre, both.
Booth says planning for the races goes on throughout the year and things are especially busy in the weeks before the season begins in Fort Pierre. Races run rain or shine and post time is 1:00 p.m.
