PIERRE, S.D. – (DRG News) National Work Zone Awareness Week is underway this week and is held to remind motorists to drive safely…for the sake of South Dakota highway workers and for everyone on the road. Darin Bergquist, Secretary of the South Dakota Department of Transportation, says the goal of the week is to let drivers know that work zone crashes are preventable. Statistics from 2010 indicate that work zone crashes killed 576 people and injured an estimated 37,000 nationally. Bergquist says motorists who are tempted to speed through work zones should think about the workers, themselves and their passengers so everyone will arrive home safely.
