PIERRE, S.D. (AP) – U.S. Representative Kristi Noem of South Dakota says she hasn’t decided yet whether to run for the Senate next year.
In a telephone call with South Dakota news organizations, Noem noted Thursday that the 2014 primary is still more than a year away. She says she believes that gives her time to consider whether to seek the Senate seat.
Democratic Senator Tim Johnson announced last month he will not seek re-election next year.
Former Governor Mike Rounds is the only Republican who has announced his candidacy for the Senate. But some conservative Republicans have said they are reluctant to support Rounds because they believe he is not conservative enough on budget and tax issues.
Rounds has defended his record and says he expects to have a primary opponent.
