HURON, S.D. – Pitching dominated the inaugural doubleheader for the Pierre Governor High School baseball team. The Govs opened the season with a split losing to Brookings 1-0 but bouncing back to get an 8-3 win over Huron in the season opener in Huron on Friday night. In the opener, Cooper Walton struck out 9, Nick Rabern had 5 K’s against Brookings but Pierre could not score a run and were limited to 4 hits. 2 by Alex Gray and 1 each by Connor Ryan and Bo Atkins. All four hits were singles. In the win over Huron, Ryan and Cody Honeywell combined for the win with Honeywell striking out 5 in relief to pick up the first win ever for Pierre High School baseball. Trey Campbell delivered a 3 run double in the 5th inning, one of two hits on the game for Trey. Bo Atkins, Alex Gray, Willie Welch, Nick Raybern, Justin Berheim, and Ian Coughlin all singled for Pierre who takes a 1-1 record into this afternoon’s home doubleheader against Mitchell at Kelley Field slated to begin at 1 pm. Admission is $5 for adults. Students are free.
