PIERRE, S.D. – The Pierre Governor tennis team opened the season Tuesday with a loss to Mitchell but bounced back with a win over Rapid City Central. Mitchell edged the Governors 5-4 with Pierre getting wins at number 1 and 3 flight singles with Nathan Ellenbecker and Brandon Vockrodt. The Governors also won a pair of doubles matches at number 1 and 2. The Governors downed Rapid City Central 7-2 with wins at the number 2 through 6 singles spots. Ellenbecker lost at number 1 flight 6-10 to the Cobblers Nathaniel Cherry. The Governors also won number 2 and 3 doubles. Governor head coach Jeff Schlekeway said he was happy with Vockrodt’s win against Mitchell but some nerves may have come into play with several players. He said the win over Rapid City Central was a good bounce back win and overall, the Govs had a good first day on the court. Pierre returns to action on Saturday when they travel to Huron to face Watertown, Sioux Falls Lincoln and Huron.
