SD Lawmakers Sustain Veto on Final Day of Session

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) – Gov. Dennis Daugaard has successfully blocked a measure that would have increased a fee imposed to fund South Dakota’s inspection of commercial fertilizer. The fee increase would have financed research into fertilizer, but Daugaard vetoed it and called it an unneeded tax. An attempt to override the governor’s veto failed on a vote of 22-13 in the Senate. That was two votes short of the two-thirds …

Rapid City Hotel Drowning of Parmelee Girl Likely Accidental

RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) – The mother of an 8-year-old girl who drowned at a Rapid City hotel says the family was on a vacation that turned tragic. Authorities on Monday identified the victim of the Saturday morning drowning as Jasann Dubray, of Parmelee. Cattle on Feed in South Dakota Down 12 Percent

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) – South Dakota feedlots with capacities of 1,000 or more animals had 230,000 cattle on feed on March 1, down 12 percent from last year. The Agriculture Department says in its latest report that placements in feedlots during February totaled 45,000 head, down 4 percent. Marketings of fed cattle during the month totaled 39,000 head, down 13 percent from 2012.
