SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Pierre Governor basketball team won their first State Championship in 31 years Saturday night. The Governors rallied for a 50-39 win over Brandon Valley at the Class AA State Championship in Sioux Falls. Pierre trailed 36-32 going into the 4th quarter but outscored the Lynx 18-3 in the final period to give Pierre it’s first basketball state championship since South Dakota went to the 3 class system and it’s first state title since 1982 and only the 4th state championship in the history of the school. Pierre’s top two all time leading scorers led the way in the title game with Lane Severyn scoring 24 and pulling down 9 rebounds and Zach Hanson added 11 points and a game high 13 rebounds for a double double. The Governors shot 34 percent from the field (15-34) and were 9 of 30 from 3 point range. Brandon Valley was led by Chase Marso who scored 18 points. But the Lynx went cold from the field hitting just 26 percent shooting (14-53). Pierre ends their season with a 20-5 record and will have a welcome home celebration for the State Champions at Riggs High Gym Sunday Night at 7:00 pm.
