PIERRE, S.D. (AP) – U.S. Sen. Tim Johnson of South Dakota says he will announce later this month whether he will seek re-election in 2014. In a phone call with reporters, Johnson says he has not entirely made up his mind whether to seek a fourth term. Former Gov. Mike Rounds is seeking the Republican nomination for the Senate seat now held by Johnson. The South Dakota race is considered a key contest in the battle for political control of the Senate. Johnson says there’s still plenty of time for him or another Democrat to prepare for next year’s campaign. Democrats have speculated that if Johnson does not seek re-election, his son, Brendan, might run. Also mentioned as a possible Democratic Senate candidate is former U.S. Rep. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin.
