Sully Buttes Wins, Chamberlain Loses in First Round State Girls Basketball Tournaments

HURON, S.D. – Remi Wientjes scored 18 points and Karlea Stahl added 16 as Sully Buttes knocked off Sanborn Central-Woonsocket in the first round of the girls State Class B basketball tournament in Huron on Thursday.  Despite shooting just 35 percent from the field, the Chargers hit 29 of 40 free throws to move into the semi final round of the tournament against top seeded Warner tonight.  Myah Sellend had 13 and Rachel Sellend 11 for Sanborn Central-Woonsocket which lost for just the second time this season.  The Chargers were outrebounded 27-23 in the game.

WATERTOWN, S.D. – Pine Ridge outscored Chamberlain 29-13 in the second and third periods and cruised to a 55-34 win over the Cubs in the opening round of the State Class A girls basketball tournament in Watertown.  The Cubs struggled offensivly shooting just 25 percent from the field on the game.  Shaylene Richard led a balanced Pine Ridge attack scoring 12 points.  Chamberlain was led by Kennedy Wagner and Jaymie Knippling who notched 7 points apeice.  Pine Ridge faces West Central in the second semi final game tonight.  Chamberlain, which had it’s 19 game winning streak snapped, plays Spearfish in the second afternoon consolation semi final round game at around 1:45 pm.
