WASHINGTON, D.C. – (DRG News) The Deputy Secretary for the Department of Agriculture will be in the state tomorrow and Thursday to announce research grants to fight U.S. and global hunger and promote rural business development. Tomorrow in Brookings, Deputy Secretary Kathleen Merrigan will hold a press conference to announce new USDA grants which will ensure greater food security in the United States and around the world. Also during her stop Wednesday at SDSU, Merrigan is expected to talk about USDA’s efforts to create new opportunities for farmers, ranchers and communities by building local and regional food systems. On Thursday, Merrigan will stop at Lower Brule. She will tour the Lakota Foods facility-which is the first and only Native American owned and operated business that produces, processes, packages and markets popcorn. Afterward, she will meet with tribal leaders to highlight USDA efforts to promote business development and job creation in rural South Dakota.
