McGovern’s Personal Items to be Auctioned in SD

George McGovern

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) – George McGovern once gave his daughter a bookend made out of soapstone in the shape of a bear. It was a symbol of the “Terr the bear” nickname he often called Teresa, who froze to death in a snow bank near a bar where she’d been drinking.
The figure is one of many deeply personal items belonging to the late South Dakota senator and presidential candidate that are going up for sale starting Saturday at McGovern’s Sioux Falls home. McGovern died at the age of 90 in October.
Furniture, books, artwork and other personal possessions owned by George McGovern and his wife Eleanor will be among the items auctioned.
Deb Sorensen, who is helping to run the estate sale, says the items range from $1 to thousands of dollars.
