PIERRE, S.D. – (DRG News) The 2013 State-Tribal Relations Day is scheduled for later this month, with several activities to take place in Pierre. J.R. LaPlante, Secretary of the Department of Tribal Relations says his office will host State-Tribal Relations Day on Wednesday, January 23. This year’s event will focus on tribal housing needs and initiatives. LaPlante says in a press release that the day will highlight both the need for housing on the reservations, as well as the accomplishments of tribal housing projects and initiatives. He says tribal and state leaders will get the chance to learn about each other and exchange ideas that can lead to improved intergovernmental relations. The day will start January 23 with a tribal listening session at the Matthew Training Center in the Foss Building from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Central Time, followed by a welcome from Governor Dennis Daugaard and comments by tribal leaders in the Capitol Rotunda from 11:45 to 1:00 p.m. There will be a live performance in the Rotunda by Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate tribal singers and dancers. A lunch will be served at 1:00 p.m.
