PIERRE, S.D. – (DRG News) A 16-year-old Pierre boy is to be arraigned on Friday morning on charges that have been leveled by a Hughes County Grand Jury. Braiden McCahren was indicted last week for First Degree Murder, Attempted First Degree Murder and alternate counts of Aggravated Assault.
Authorities were called to McCahren’s home on December 18, where a Pierre teen had been shot. 16-year-old Dalton Williams was found laying in the entry way of McCahren’s home and had sustained a gunshot wound to his chest. Court paperwork says Williams was transported to the hospital, where he died of his injuries. McCahren was indicted for the murder charge for Williams’ death.
The Attempted Murder and Aggravated Assault counts are linked to allegations that McCahren pointed a gun at a third boy, identified in court papers as T.Y.
The three teens had been in the home at the same time when the shooting occurred. Court papers released after the shooting state that T.Y. told police that he and McCahren got into an argument about a paintball incident that had occurred in the past. After play-wrestling, T.Y. said that McCahren retrieved a semi-automatic shotgun and pointed it at him. He then heard a click. T.Y. went on to say that McCahren then retrieved a shot shell from nearby drawers, loaded it into the firearm, pointed it at him again and heard another click sound. T.Y. told police the gun went off as McCahren faced him and Williams-and Williams was struck.
First Degree Murder is a Class A felony, Attempted First Degree Murder is a Class 2 felony and Aggravated Assault is considered a Class 3 felony.
McCahren is scheduled to be arraigned on the charges Friday morning at 10:30 a.m.
