PIERRE, S.D. – (DRG News) The Oahe Chapter of the American Red Cross received a donation last week from the South Dakota Department of Social Services. The money is to be used by the Red Cross to assist victims of Superstorm Sandy that impacted portions of the east coast in late October. Mike Mehlhaff, director for the local Red Cross chapter said last week that the organization was given the donation by the DSS and it totaled almost $2,000.
DSS employees gathered the money as part of the agency’s state employee “Casual Friday” fundraiser. Mehlhaff says he is always impressed by how local citizens step up when disasters occur-to help those that need it-both locally and nationally.
Mehlhaff says a Red Cross supervisor in Sioux Falls was very happy with the DSS donation and the funds have already been sent on for use by the Red Cross in the eastern United States.
