PIERRE, S.D. – (DRG News) A fund that was set up to honor an outdoors broadcaster and his family will be giving out grants in the Spring of 2013. The Tony and Dar Dean Outdoor Education Fund was set up in the memory of outdoor broadcaster and writer Tony Dean, who died in 2008. In addition, the fund honors Dean’s wife, Dar, who is also an outdoors enthusiast and has a strong commitment to enhancing outdoor education opportunities. The Tony and Dar Dean Outdoor Education Fund will offer small grant funding for projects that are linked with youth conservation education in South Dakota. The grants will help support individuals and organizations which work to provide quality educational outdoor experiences. They can be used in ways that include providing supplies to promote outdoor knowledge and skills, and create new activities and events that increase outdoor knowledge and participation among South Dakota families and youth. The grants can be applied for from January 1 through March 15 of 2013 and grants will range from $500 to up to $1,500. It’s expected that as much as $4,000 will be given out through the fund in 2013 and organizers hope to build the fund so a larger number of grants can be awarded in the future. The Tony and Dar Dean Outdoor Education Fund was established by the Dean family and the South Dakota Parks and Wildlife Foundation.
