FORT PIERRE, S.D. – (DRG News) Two local youngsters were honored Tuesday by Fort Pierre’s Women of the Moose as the winners of a first time essay contest.  The theme for the contest was “My Family is Best Because…”    Students were asked to write a 150 word message and include a hand drawn picture of their family.  Two fifth grade students were chosen as the contest winners-Andrew Coverdale of McKinley Elementary in Pierre and Joah Royer of Stanley County Elementary School in Fort Pierre.  Royer’s essay focused on her appreciation for various family members and on her family as a whole.  She said writing it was easy, and that she had lots of family members in mind when she put together her essay.  Royer’s essay prize was a new bicycle and she says she’s got fun plans for the bike when the weather warms.

Coverdale said Tuesday that he has a caring family-so it wasn’t too hard to put his thoughts into words.

Coverdale says he plans to use the $100 gift card he received to buy craft items-since he likes to make things.

Norma Tibbs, Recorder for the Women of Moose said in the past, the organization has had scholarship programs for high school students and does other projects in the community, but they felt they would do something for younger students this year.  She says she hopes the essay program expands next year.

This was the first year the essay contest was held.  Tibbs says there were lots of essays to read and that it was hard to pick a winner, but she says judges enjoyed reading through each one.
