Fire Burns Gettysburg Business Friday

Firefighter in Front of Firetruck

GETTYSBURG, S.D. – (DRG News) A Friday afternoon fire destroyed a Gettysburg business.  Potter County Sheriff Curt Hamburger says the fire was reported about 1:30 p.m. Friday at J & B’s Quickstop, along Highway 212 in Gettysburg.  The building houses a gas station, convenience store, bar and diner.  Hamburger says the fire started in the kitchen of the business.  Employees attempted to use a fire extinguisher to put the fire out, but it spread from there.  Staff and patrons were able to evacuate safely.  The Gettysburg Fire Department is located across the street from the business and firefighters were on hand quickly.   Crews were able to keep gas pumps located near the building shielded from the flames of the blaze.  They received assistance from the Hoven, Agar and Lebanon fire departments in fighting the fire.  Hoven firefighters brought a ladder-type truck and Agar and Lebanon brought water.  Hamburger says traffic traveling along Highway 212 was rerouted a few blocks around the fire for a time.  Firefighters had to bring in equipment to knock down some of the walls so they could get to the fire.  Fire crews were at the site of the fire through last night.
