PIERRE, S.D. – The Pierre Governor basketball team won their second game in as many nights as they downed the Mitchell Kernals 70-56 Saturday night at Riggs High Gym in the home opener for the Govs. The Governors led from start to finish as they outrebounded Mitchell 43-22 on the game. Pierre led at all the quarter stops and was up 8 at 32-24 at the half. Zach Hanson led Pierre with 22 points and 9 rebounds as the Governors had 3 players in double figures. Lane Severyn scored 14 points with the final two putting him over the 1,000 point scored mark for his Governor career. Garrett Pochop had 10 points for Pierre which improved to 2-0 in the ESD Conference and 2-0 overall. Mitchell was led by Cole Morgan’s 15 points. Seth Cavanaugh had 14 and Jared Schmidt scored 12 as the Kernals lost for the second straight night. The Pierre Junior Varsity won 40-37 and the Governor sophomores also won their second games of the season. The Governors host Brandon Valley in a matchup of unbeatens Friday in their next action.
