PIERRE, S.D. – (DRG News) The Pierre Fire Department held its annual awards banquet and elections last night. Deputy Chief Ian Paul thanked the firefighters for their varying time serving the department-with a few having been members for more than thirty years. Paul also thanked the Pierre Fire Department Auxiliary, Oahe Chapter of the American Red Cross, AMR, Pierre dispatchers and police and the Fort Pierre Fire Department for the assistance each has given to the PFD in the past year. Fire Chief Bill Alexander told those at the gathering that there have been six structure fires in Pierre this year-but that there had been no serious firefighter or civilian injuries or deaths. He also thanked the families of the department members for supporting the service of their loved ones.
Pierre City Commissioner Steve Harding spoke to the crowd and told them that all the members play an important role in the department and in the community.
The evening wrapped up with the handing out of annual awards. Aric Frost was named the recipient of the Rookie of the Year Award, Paula Tronvold was given the Firefighter of the Year Award and Cory Hoffrogge was named the winner of the Donald Marso Award.
In elections, three of the chief officers were unopposed; Deputy Chief Ian Paul, Secretary Paula Tronvold and Treasurer Ken Marks. Members chose Pat Snyder to return for another year as First Assistant Chief. A coin flip was needed in the election for Second Assistant Chief-as there was a tie between current office holder Bill Newling and Leon Ellis. The coin toss came out in favor of Leon Ellis-who will take over the Second Assistant Chief spot in the coming year.
