SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) – A former Veteran’s Health Administration patient has been given three years of probation for overcharging the agency more than $22,000 for mileage reimbursements.
Department of Veterans Affairs patients are paid mileage reimbursements for travel to and from health care facilities.
The Argus Leader reports that 45-year-old Wendy Gonzales lived in Selby but received treatment in Sioux Falls until June 2010, when she moved to Le Mars, Iowa. That cut the 245-mile drive to 80 miles.
But prosecutors say she continued to bill the VA for mileage based on her Selby address until February 2011, which lead to more than $22,000 in improper payments.
Gonzales reached a plea deal in September.
In the year since her indictment, she has repaid almost $7,000 of the bill.
