PIERRE, S.D. – (DRG News) Organizers say that more than 100,000 meals were prepared for the hungry during an event held Saturday at a Pierre church. Community Bible Church hosted Twin Cities based Feed My Starving Children for the meal packaging activity. Final tallies show that 531 people volunteered to help with the effort-from set up to packaging and clean up. The church has worked the past few months to secure enough volunteers for the Saturday event. People who signed up worked short shifts packaging chicken protein, soy, dried vegetables and rice. When the bags eventually arrive at their destinations the substance is mixed with boiling water and makes a quick food product for hungry youth. Final numbers provided by the church show that 108,864 meals were packed Saturday. The meal bags were placed in boxes, resulting in more than 500 boxes being filled for distribution through Feed My Starving Children.
