PIERRE, S.D. – (DRG News) Authorities are investigating an incident involving what was initially a report that a bank robbery had occurred at a Pierre bank this morning. Pierre Police Captain Elton Blemaster says officers were dispatched to BankWest’s Capitol Avenue Branch at the corner of Highland and Capitol Avenues to the report of a bank robbery at 10:21 a.m. Blemaster says when officers arrived, it was apparent that a theft had occurred, and not a robbery. An investigation showed that there had been a theft of an undisclosed amount of money from the bank. Officials said that no weapons were involved and there were no injuries. An extensive search took place for suspects who were described as a male and female both in their 30’s. Blemaster says that about 12:50 p.m., the two suspects were taken into custody by the Campbell County Sheriff. They were taken to the police department in Mobridge and the Campbell County Sheriff’s Office says they have since been placed in the custody of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Agencies that were involved in the reported crime today were the Pierre Police Department, Hughes and Stanley County Sheriff’s Offices, South Dakota Highway Patrol, Campbell and Walworth County Sheriff’s Offices, South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation, the FBI and the United States Attorney’s Office. Blemaster won’t say how much money was taken or if that money has been recovered. He says the incident is still under investigation and the names of the suspects could be released sometime tomorrow.
