PIERRE, S.D. – (DRG News) Today is the start of Feeding South Dakota’s second annual Statewide Turkey Drive. Turkeys and Thanksgiving fixings will be taken in at all three Food Bank sites across the state, which includes the newest outlet-Pierre’s Feeding South Dakota location. Russ Hofeldt, Central Operations Manager for Feeding South Dakota, says that people can donate all this week, and items that needed are those that are used in preparing Thanksgiving meals.

Hofeldt says turkeys, boxed mashed potatoes, gravy mixes and more can be brought to the Feeding South Dakota site near the intersection of Garfield Avenue and Airport Road through Friday.

Last year, enough turkeys and money was raised to feed close to 2,500 families. Hofeldt says Pierre’s location took in about 200 turkeys. This year, Feeding South Dakota hopes to provide 5,000 families with the ingredients that are needed for a traditional Thanksgiving meal.
Hofeldt says Pierre’s Feeding South Dakota bank serves more than 80 partner agencies and more than 20 counties in central South Dakota.

Hofeldt says the Pierre warehouse for Feeding South Dakota has helped many, but unfortunately, there is still a need. As for future plans, Hofeldt says plans call for starting a new mobile food pantry sometime after the first of the year which will take food to areas that are not served or are underserved. Pierre’s warehouse receives donations from nearby Walmart, which donates meat, produce, dairy and other non perishable dry goods. Other donations come straight from food manufacturers who are affiliated with
Feeding America. For more information on this week’s Turkey Drive, call the Pierre Feeding South Dakota location at 494-3663.
